What Degrades a Ceramic Coating in Las Vegas
Las Vegas water is among the hardest municipal water in the United States. High calcium and magnesium content means that every time water evaporates on your vehicle's surface — whether from an improper wash, a surprise sprinkler hit, or a rainstorm — it leaves a mineral deposit behind. If those deposits are allowed to bond to the ceramic surface over time without removal, they can chemically etch the coating and reduce its hydrophobic performance.
Desert dust is the second major threat. The fine particulate that settles on vehicles in Nevada is mildly abrasive. Wiping a dusty coated surface with a dry cloth introduces micro-scratches into the coating. In a high-UV environment, even minor surface damage to the coating accelerates degradation.
The Two-Bucket Wash Method and Why It Matters
The most damaging thing most coating owners do is drag dirt across their paint during a wash. The two-bucket method uses one bucket of soapy pH-neutral wash solution and one bucket of clean rinse water. You dip your mitt into the soap, wash a panel, rinse the mitt in the clean bucket before re-loading with soap. The rinse bucket captures and settles the grit your mitt picked up rather than transferring it back to the paint surface.
Use a pH-neutral automotive shampoo — never dish soap or household cleaners. Dish soap strips the coating's hydrophobic layer aggressively. On a coated car, the wash needs to be gentle because the coating is doing the contamination prevention, not the shampoo.
Dealing with Hard Water Spots
If you get a sprinkler hit or a hard-water rinse and the water evaporates before you can dry the surface, you will see white mineral deposits. On a fresh coating, these typically wipe away easily with a damp microfiber and a dedicated water spot remover product. Do not use household vinegar — the acidity is uncontrolled and varies by product.
Persistent water spots that do not respond to a water spot remover may have etched into the coating surface. At that stage, the solution is a light decontamination and a coating maintenance booster spray applied by hand. In severe cases, the coating may need a professional correction and a maintenance top coat — which we handle in-shop.
Annual Inspection and Coating Boosters
